Jim,
The only thing that keeps the axel centered in axel housing without the drum assembly and bearing in place, is the rear axel shaft seal. This seal is located inside the housing near the outer end and replaced from trumpet end of the housing. If there is unrestricted lateral movement of the axel shaft the seal is bad. The axel seal prevents the gear lube from the differential from entering the rear wheel bearing and diluting the wheel bearing grease.

The rear wheel bearing seal is located between the bearing and the retaining snap ring inside the rear hub. This seal prevents grease (and gear lube if present)from reaching the brake area.
