axel/brakes

When I removed my rear drum, I found very old deposits of dried grease.Brakes were coated with crud and curuption.Where is the grease seal?On the drum or the axel end?Books not real clear.Also how much play is allowed in the axel shaft itself.I have about 1/8 inch verticle movement. No movement in and out. Are the axel shims called for here? 30/31 coupe.
