Back in the olde days, which basically was anything before '56 every car owner carried TWO thermostats. In those days it was a 140 for summer, and a 180 for winter.

The 140 in summer got the engine up into it's safe operating range where it would run and not experience the wear associated with cold operation.

It wasn't hot enough, however to get anything very useable out of a hot water heater in the winter - thus the 180 which was inserted in the fall and removed again in the spring.

Bottom line if you want heat in the winter 180 is the only way, but change it out or you'll lose water rapidly in the warmer weather.
