: I'm quite green working with model A's and I need som help.
: Last year I rebuilt my engine. Last week I opened the valve spring cover to check the valve clerance. Below the springs I found water with anti-freeze, when i drained the engine from oil it was had a brown grey color and was not clear. It was also some water coming out first when i removed the oil plug. I removed the cylinder top to check sealing and the cylinders. The piston in cylinder 1 and 4 had a dark grey thin carbon cover, cylinder 2 and 3 was cleaner but had a slightly greesy golden colored surface. The intake valves were all light grey and the outlet valves were dark grey.
: The sealing between engine and cylinder top was without damage, but it was mounted up side down.
: I can also mention that my water pump has been leaking
: heavily the last two month.
: Please help me if you have any idea what the problem might be.
An easy way to check is to pull your spark plugs...water flashes into steam and cleans the chamber ...and the spark plug...the extra clean one will be the leaker...You could also get a "block tester" at Napa Parts store..about $18...but why bother...Model A engines LOVE to blow gaskets...especially if they were not retorqued after a rebuild. .when you remove the head look extra close at the gasket and you can see where it failed...I like to use the fiber gaskets and lots of that spray gasket sealer...also make sure you clean the stud threads and DO NOT polish the surface of the head...it needs to be rough to hold the gasket...I have found that heads that have gasket blowing problems are usually too smoothe...take it to a auto machine and have it surfaced...it will come back with a real course surface...but thats best...
Also..if you have any anti-freeze in the water...get it out quick...anti-freeze destroys babbitt. Joel
