: Hi Folks,

: I found hairline fractures in the valve chamber cover at the oil overflow holes where the oil return pipe bolts on. Probably the result of overtightening the bolt. There's also a hairline fracture where the return pipe meets the half-round end piece that gets the bolt at the same end. At least one of these cracks is leaking oil. So, somewhat embarrassed, I must conclude that I overtightened it. Can these cracks be fixed by a competent welder?

yes, your part can be fixed, but getting a sound repair on thin castings can sometimes be a little tricky. i would suggest brazing instead of welding. you might consider drillilg small holes just beyond the cracks to stop them, then grinding a v-groove to the holes, warming the entire part a bit, then flowing brazing material into the groove with a helper standing by to peen the bronze with the pointy end of a chipping hammer as it cools. after the part has cooled file, grind, or mill the gasket surfaces to flatness.
but---and this worries me---have these parts become so scarce as to justify repairing on of these, i would think someone, somewhere would have a spare side cover in the junk bin which you could buy cheaply enough
