Leaky carb and backfiring

I've been working our family's 1929 Model A Roadster Pickup and I've run into two perplexing problems.

1) The carburator leaks like crazy... mostly from the
bottom around the mounting bolt, but also around the main seal. I've replace whatever gaskets and washers that were there when I took it apart... and its better... but still far
too much leaking to be normal.

2) its running great... but whenever I cut the ignition it backfires... but not right away... it takes a few seconds... and then BOOM... or is that BANG? Could this be the result of
advancing the timing lever too much? Or what else?

Thank you!

Eric
