Chuck, make sure that the rest of the steering parts are not at fault.Check the pitman arm - watch it push the drag link and make sure there's no slop where the pitman ball attaches.Then, go up to the left front spindle where the drag link attaches and check that point too.Then, check the tie rod ends -

All these points add up to steering sloppiness - if any one or more of them are loose, you'll get a lot of travel before steering starts.
