The inserts I've seen used are rod bearings for a small british car used for the mains, and I believe for a continental industrial engine on the rods. These were the best match to the original diameters on the crankshaft. They are considerably narrower than the A journals, so two sets are used in each rod and the front and center mains and three sets on the rear. The bearings are straight out of the federal mogul catalogue, which also has the specs on bore sizes for the bearings and etc. I can get the numbers for you if you are still interested...although a fair amount of specialized machining is required, a competant, creative machienest can certainly figure it out.
The machinework required on the block is line boring it to match the required diameter for the bearings, notching the block & caps for the tabs on the bearing and adding in some oil flow grooves to the block, and adding a thrust bearing to the rear main (since this would have been in the babbit). This requres the most fabrication of any of it, I've seen it done using bronze bearing materal.
The rods are bored out to the bearing size, after having material built up on either side to replace the lost babbit that forms a "thrust bearing" on the rods. The necessity of bearing material here is questionable (as most anything newer dosen't have any) but something needs to go in place of the babbit to prevent lots of endplay.
Some of the people out there that do this professionally (such as Ron Kelly, who you could probably track down with the help of this board) are fairly willing to discuss the parts and procedures used, some aren't. My dad has now built a couple of engines like this and got the basic info from Ron Kelly (I was the "lucky" one who got to track down the bearings and part numbers and all that, though).
There are also ongoing debates about pressure oiling (full pressure, mains only, no mods, what is nesc. with inserts and all that), counterbalanced cranks, B grind cams, big valves, hardened seats, and all that other stuffso you'll have plenty to consider unless you go back bone stock.
Drop me a line if you want the bearing #'s and specs....good luck!

Scott
