Oil Pan Gasket ??

I am in the process of putting my motor back together and I am on the oil pan. The kit I got has a short white wax type of gasket.
I think this goes in the front in the grove near the crank. Does it have to be soaked in oil before installing and do I need to make sure it is flush with the pan, cut it?

The rear gasket???
I have a cork gasket about 6 inches long. I put it on the block and it is too long, do I cut it to be flush. I t also seems wider than the opening. Force it or cut it?
