If you are rebuilding the rear end suggest you get a copy of MODEL A FORD REAR AXEL ADJUSTMENT by Dr. Jack Richard in Jan/Feb 1995 issue of The Restorer. If you don't have that issue let me know and I will get a copy to you.
You should not have to grind off the nubs you described.Pinion depth is set by the double race in the banjo.It can be adsusted by shimming that race but is not normally required.If you have interfence with thew nubs something is wrong. Regarding the axel housing welds: the weld faced forward, downward and upward during different time periods.See Area 4 UNDERCARRIAGE of thre Judging Standards & Restoration Guidelines.Other than a 0.005 inch difference
in the depth of the carrier bearing race and forgerd versus welded shock absorber balls the axel housings are the same.
