: I have a block that needs main bearings poured, and after checking around I have found that most of the shops that I would care to deal with are out of pratical driving range.

: Checking out shipping costs on truck lines, etc. surprised me because of the cost. It could be that I have run into one of the hidden costs of Model A fun and games.

: Does anyone know of a cheap way of shipping a Model A block and crank shaft?

You strap that sucker to a pallet and ship it on a truck lines. It's too heavy for UPS. I have a sign in my shop that reads "If you have to ask how much it costs, you can't afford it" My experience had been to ship something that heavy has run $60-$80 for a trip of about 700 miles, one way; compared to what you're about to spend on that engine, its peanuts. The only cheap way is to find someone going that way!
