I would go for the voltage regulator or an alternator. The alternator will give you a much more dependable charge, however it does not look authentic. Several years ago I installed one of the voltage regulators that are attached to the band. This gave good results while it worked. The problem with this system (as they point out in the installation instructions) is that several of the wires are very very close to the spinning armature. In my case one of them eventually was damaged by touching. It worked irratic for several weeks, eventually putting out a charge over 30 amps and burning out the generator.I am told that the regulators that sit in the cutout can do not have this problem. After I burned out the generator I installed an alternator. While I have been very satisfied with the performance of this I am considering for appearance, installing a rebuilt generator with a top mounted voltage regulator. Jack |
