Voltage Regulator or Cut Out?That is the question

I'm planning to replace the generator cutout on my 29 Roadster Pickup due to frequent shorting and subsequent batter discharge.I can either replace with cutout, or go for the electronic voltage regulator (not just the diode, the whole ball of wax).Any recommendations on which route to take, and any problems i should look out for in installing and maintaining these buggers? Thanks.
