speedo gear cap

The cap that holds the little gear and bolts up to the bottom of the torque tube on my '30 is badly cracked. I will be on the lookout for a better one, but I'm curious about fixing the one I have.Does anyone know if thispart is pot metal or aluminum?Does anybody have any experience or advice to offer?
