Why can't I put o-rings on my rear axle?

Real axle seals appear to be worn as axles are leaking grease.As I don't drive my car except once a month to the car show about 1 mile from my house, I thought I could just install a few skinny o-rings on my rear axles to take up the space around them where the grease is leaking.Seems like it would work to me.Anyone ever tiried it?Anyone think it's a bad idea?Thanks, Harold.
