A rear end question

I am helping my father restore his 31 pickup. This is our first Model A restoration attempt. Upon disassembling the rear end we found that the pinion had several teeth broke off. My questions are : I have a rear end out of a 34 ford pickup, are the ring and pinion the same ? And any comments on using the 3.54:1 instead of the stock ratio ?
