Doug,

I was dissapointed in the paint chip sizes as well.If I understand the system however, the computer matching only determines a close color from existing formulas. The color would then need to be tinted by hand to bring it closer. The problem that prevented the inclusion of formulas is THERE ARE NONE!These paint chips were made from original parts, paint chips, etc.The chips were not derived from any existing paints.I don't have any idea what the cost would be to have 78 paint colors formulated, but I would suspect it would have brought the price of the book up to the $50 -$75 range and that wouldn't have done much good.

The other problem with a formula is each is paint specific. If we had the colors formulated in Centari for example, to use any other paint would require it to still be hand matched. The reason you can cross over to other products for a "86 T-Bird" color is that all the manufacturers have developed the formulas at their own expense to compete in the market place.

It's becoming a lost art, but there are still many suppliers out ther that will hand match your colors. That's what all of us have done for years if we didn't wish to use the PPG substitutions that were no longer close to the original. At least everyone has some sort of sample available now to know what the original colors were.

I know this doesn't get you any closer to solving the problem, but maybe now you'll understand why.
