Well, Ya got me goin' with this one.I attempted to do some research and the info is sketchy at best. The first parts book has them mixed up.Some are errors in the parts book and some are probably just different than we expect. What we have in the "Standards" is based on research that George DeAngelis did as editor of the Model A News and later published in his book.It turns out that all that info was from a later time and apparently the earlier info was overlooked.

I looked at the photos and the later bracket if reversed would leave the lamp to high.I called a friend that has a Jan. '28 pickup and has been researching and writing about the early stuff for MANY years. He reminded me the early pickup beds were longer by 1/2"-3/4" (closer to the cab) and had a different wood structure.Apparently this bed appeared as late as May '28.With this bed the lamp was under the bed (nothing new here!), and was mounted on a bracket he described as the early Coupe/Roadster bracket, heated and twisted.

Not being familiar with the wood structure under the bed, I couldn't clearly understand how it would be bent or how it would mount.

Wish I could tell you more, but this is about it for this go-around.

Good luck!
