John,
I guess you didn't find any pickles either!If your (Brass) secondary was that bad I can't imagine how bad the passages are in your steel castings.I would recommend you remove all the passage plugs and clean all the passages.Or find a new casting if it's a common model carb.Before you do that continue tracing the fuel system now that you've eliminated the gas cap possibility.Tank Clean?Pet cock? fuel lines...
Let us know what you find.Maybe borrow a good carb for a while from a friend to test your theory.
