That being the late 50's and early 60's when I had my first couple of "A"s the rule of thumb was that 45 was the maximum "All day" speed if you wanted to keep it together.One complication was that there were a lot of engines out there that had been repaired with high-lead content babbitt which wasn't as robust as the hi-tin stuff that you couldn't buy during the war.While there's others on the board that are somewhat more optimistic about the capabilities of a stock engine, I've never felt that more than 45-47 was a good idea without significant modifications - counterbalances being the big one.The engines just don't sound very "comfortable" above those speeds to me. (assuming standard 3.78 gearing).
