Bruce, Just another thought. You stated that you checked the carb bowl for gunk, but how about further up the line?My 31 did the same thing as yours after a few weeks of running great. The car started to intermitently backfire, miss, and then eventually die. After exhaustive checks of the electrical and fuel systems, it was found that crud in the tank was blocking the shut-off valve. A large piece of crud may block the flow without getting into the carb. Just to be sure, disconnect the fuel line from the carb and check the fuel flow.It should be good and strong. If the flow is not strong, take some compressed air ( a football pump will do) and blow back into the tank to see if it clears. If it does clear, then there probably is crud in the tank.A good cleaning of the tank and the shut-off valve is needed in this case.A filter on the tank side of the shut-off valve is also a good idea. Good luck whatever the cause. |
