: Hi;
:1930 model A Ford, coupe, standard, 45B
:( REPLACING SUBRAIL )
: 1. do rivets have to be hot when installing?
:
Not the ones used to hold the body panels.

2. how hot is hot?

Usually cherry red if required.

: 3. what source of heat should be used?

Oxyacetylene torch is good.

: 4. how is the alignment of the old subrail maintained
:so other parts will fit (doors, body, etc).

Level the frame on the floor via jack stands.
Align everything before disassembly, doors, trunk/lid.
Remove the bad section.
Fit the new piece, and use screws to hold things till you're ready to rivet.

: 5. is a dolly and hammer used to peen the rivets?

You can, but there is a tip for a cheapo air hammer that works well using a dolly to buck against.
:
6. would it be better to replace the rear half of the
:subrails only and weld it to the existing subrail?

Do the half sub rail and weld to the existing, it is easier in the long run. Be prepared to do some bending, cutting, and tweaking as these are repo stampings, they are close but not exact to fit.

: 7. are any publications available covering subrail re-
:placement?

There is some mention here and there but not exclusively.
It seems that a lot of material written is geared to slightly worn cars, cars that needed subrails were deemed to look for something better. Yea I can't afford one of them so I'm choose the route you are now asking. Marco has a neat sight you should check out..

Good luck,
