Hi Roger,

I'm glad to hear that you up and running again. There's nothing quite like the ticking of new valves is there?Anyway, my problem turned out to be a little different than your's, but don't think that I haven't thought of the impeller problem also.In my case I too thought that my fan belt had been over taught and loosened it right at the gas station. The whole elapsed distance from house to station was 3 miles. The rapping however, persisted.

I removed the water pump and dissasembled it.The problem was not the front bearing etc... that I had suspected, but the new stainless shaft that I had installed.I had this rebuilt pump on my old engine and the total mileage on the pump was about 55 miles. The shaft was scalloped severely at the front bearing and a deep ring was worn into it at the packing nut. The pump was properly built and lubricated.

I returned it to my vendor and he, all of the old timers and myself had a round table to discuss what caused its failure. The result?"Cheap foreign Steel" was the overwhelming answer. This shaft was easily gouged by the common garage door key!My supplier (Doug Diver) completely rebuilt my pump with a new stainless shaft, bearings etc... free of charge and I'm back in the saddle again! Thanks Doug!

Whew!I thought that I had piston slap or a loose rod or main bearing at only 3 miles! To make matters worse when I checked the oil on my dip stick I couldn't see any!Oh my God! No oil! Engine rapping! I'm dead!Don't worry. The oil was so clean I couldn't see it on the dip stick! It was full. In my old engine the oil was always as black as pitch.

Thanks for the help,

Regards,

Kevin Daly
