Kevin,
I'm not sure if this is part of the problem or not.I too have just put in a rebuilt engine and got it going in the last two weeks.My water pump leaked like crazy and I found the error I'd made.
Once put back into place, the rad. back on etc., I tightened up the belt at the generator and started up the motor again.
What a knock !
The impeller was hitting the motor....Setting the belt to roughly one inch of play eliminated the knock.I guess I was a little over zealous on the tightness of the belt.
Not sure if this may be a related problem for you...
