Just as some additional information - The screen is in the tank to begin with not for filtration, but for fire protection. The mesh is too small to allow a flame front to migrate into the tank from the filler neck. The effect is that if there's static electricity jumping around, you can get a small pop when the gas inside the screen ignites, but it won't migrate down into the tank and explode. Henry used to drop his cigar into an open gas tank as a demo (wouldn't OSHA love that today!). I've run without screens and lived through it, but you should be aware that there's a possibility of real trouble without it.
