The only thing that keeps the 600W in a 7 tooth box is that
felt seal (600W laughs at those) and the fit of the worm
shaft against the brass bushing. When people pump the boxes
full of grease, the dirt in suspension scores the end of the
worm shaft where is rides on the bushing creating a situation
just like that of an old fuel shut-off valve, when the myriad
scores allow all kinds of fluids to pass down and around. This
same situation can exist between the sector shaft and its
bushings only the sector shaft is much, much harder and tends
to wear smoothly. But here again, if it's out of tolerance
there's a whole lot of space for oil the pass through and out.
We machine the ends of these worm shafts so they're round and
smooth again and then build an undersized bushing sized just
to fit them. While we're at it, we leave off the grease groove
Henry put in the original bushings, just to make absolutely
SURE that they'd leak! 600W is such evil stuff, that even
without the groove, it WILL find its way down to your felt,
but in reduced enough quantities that the felt can handle it.
You can also replace the felt with neoprene seals at this point,
but don't waste your time or money on that unless you take
care of the bushing, because usually the worm shaft is not
turning the way it should due to uneven wear and it will tear
up the neoprene.
