Welting on my 1930 Model A Ford Closed Cab Pickup

I am in the process of installing the running boards on my pickup. It is an extremely tight fit to put the running board between the front fender and the rear fender! In fact, I think I will scratch the new paint on the rear fender while doing so! I need good tips on installing this running board. But, my real question is this

Q-DO I PUT WELTING BETWEEN THE REAR FENDER AND THE EDGE OF THE RUNNING BOARD?

This Closed Cab Pickup is an early 1930 model because it has two parts to the side splash shields. Of course, there is welting that goes between the two pieces and continues down to the outside edge of the front fender. I am a little confused because if welting is there, then why wouldn't there be welting between the rear fender and the edge of the running board?

I need all the help I can get on this one! I don't think I have room for welting because of the tightness of the fit! But, I want to do it correctly so that I will not be downgraded in a competitive situation.
