We build permanent thrust faces onto the sides of the rods with brass. I don't really know why pressure. I do know that we've done a couple for people and not pressured them - for what it's worth, they're still running. I suppose that it's to prolong the life of the inserts - they don't have thick babbitt and lots of shims like "stockers" do - so in theory they might not last as long. It seems like, in the main, the people having the insert job done are already spending such a phenomenal amount of money they figure "in for a penny, in for a pound?" Anybody have a more definitive answer? I'll ask my machinist. |
