rad mounting bolts & shims

I am attempting to align a hood and one suggestion has been to lower the rad. Can I do this by removing all the rubber shims between rad and frame? If I do this will I decrease the gap at the bottom of the hood by the cowl and increase the gap between the bottom of rad shell and hood? This is what I want to do. My doors close nicely and I am concerned that if I raise the cowl by adding shims under the front body mount bolts, I may disturb door alignment. Another question - How tightly should the castle nuts on the rad mounting bolts be drawn down against the springs? It would seem to me that the purpose of the springs must be to give the rad a little bit of give as the car is driven on rough roads. Is this right?
