Scott,
I have not lightened a early flywheels but I have cut down 5 or 6 later model A flywheels. The biggest reason to lighten the flywheel in the first place is that when counterbalancing the Model A crank you are adding weight. You need to bring the weight back down at least the amount that was added. I cut 3 down 9 pounds which is about what you
added. I cut the others down 20 to 22 poundswith no problems. My personal opinion I wouldn't cut any walls to less than 3/4 thick and only thin side opposite the clutch face 3/16" under original. Original weight of a standard flywheel is 63 pounds, the Model A needed this stored energy to help a low speeds but on most modern driving this fly wheel is way to heavy. A modern flywheel is only about 30 pounds.
Counterbalancing helps move a large amount of weight from the flywheel and spreads it out across the entire assembly which should help decrease wear to the center main.
