Looseness of the rear wheel at this bearing can cause you to have problems with your brakes. Although there may not have been a noticeable problem using the old bearing and race along with worn out backing plates and brakes this is likely to change when you bring everything else into "like new" tolerances. I had the experience of an emergency brake band locking up and jamming inside the drum at a fairly good rate of speed. This happened again with a new brake band (the other one was destroyed) before I realized what was causing it.
I recently replaced the bearing and race in the u-joint end of my torque tube because there was considerable side to side play of the driveshaft. The original bearing and race looked beautiful so I gave it a second thought until I checked the clearances with a micrometer. I don't know how the assembly could be so worn but look so good. The new bearing and race did the trick.
Better to do this repair now if it needs it than 1000 miles from home on a tour.
