Flattened Housing Races

When reassembling my rear axle, I checked and polished the races which form the extreme outer ends of the housings.One was slightly flattened at the bottom.The bearing (old and seemingly original) shows no signs of nastiness at all , but when assembled you can move the wheel up and down slightly.I have read some opinions that say let it be - it's not a major issue, and others that say to have it machined and then press one of the new races over top.How critical is this?(I admit to thinking, "Well, if it ran successfully for multi years like this, then.....!It does run with no noise at all.)
