Brian,

First the easy question. You have to remove the pan to get to the oil pump, there is not a removable plate.

Push rods are found on engines where the valves are in the head and the cam is in the block.. Since the Model A is not this type of engine it does not have push rods.Originally the Model A engines used non-adjustable tappets and adjustments were made by grinding down the ends of the valves.Since normal wear would tend to lower the valve in the seat you would grind down more of the end of the valve to adjust the gap. There are no shims used, if the gap is too large get another valve or grind the seats. It is possible that there is a carbon build-up on your valve seats or valves and if you re-seat your valves the valve to tappet gap will become smaller. Now if the gap becomes too small then you will have to grind the end of the valve. Each time you do this you will have to remove then install the valves. This is why most engine rebuilders use adjustable tappets now to make this adjustment easier. If you have non-adjustable tappets you should consider replacing them with the adjustable type. Hope this helps.
