Hi Jim

Just a warning, if you have bought an alternator fitted for positive ground - as orginnal on Model A - you will destroy it if you put your battery negative ground as suggested by D.J. Voyce in earlier answer

With more than 100.000 kilometers of Model A driving i'm still prefering the original generator, it has solved well in many years, but I know that many are worn out, but mostly they cam be renovated to original standards.

I think that some of the charging problem is that the model A has an ampmeter, and many of us panics when it reads negative, but to my experience you can drive 3 - 4 hours in night and still starts the car next morning.

Here in Denmark modern cars have to drive with lights on all day, it meen that many flash their lights to tell that you drives your Model A (legal) with out ligths on, fine fellows but borring, I therefor often drives with cowl-ligts on (15 watts bulb) and no problem.

But I have made on modfication i have put on a generator cooler (from Snyders) which is an original ass.

Have a nice day

: : Due to not having a rebuildable generator I purchased a 6 volt
: : one wire hookup aternator for my 29 closed cab pickup and now
: : I have a slight current drain through the alt. This goes away
: : when I remove the one wire hookup.I am not on the road yet so cannot tell if the charging rate is correct.Do I have a defective alt.Or am I just charging up somthing inside.I don't think this would be normal operation. And for the purist this is the only alteration except for a little more comfortable seat cushion. Thanks for any and all help.

: G'Day Jim,
:Silly question & I'm not sure it'll help but most alternators nowadays are negative ground (I've yet to come across a posotive ground one) so did you remember to reverse your battery polarity?. This may cause a problem if you haven't, as a diode is just a valve that allows current to flow in one direction only.
