: : Due to not having a rebuildable generator I purchased a 6 volt

: : when I remove the one wire hookup.I am not on the road yet so cannot tell if the charging rate is correct.Do I have a defective alt.Or am I just charging up somthing inside.I don't think this would be normal operation. And for the purist this is the only alteration except for a little more comfortable seat cushion. Thanks for any and all help.

: Hi Jim..

: When I converted my A to 12 volts negative ground, I took my alternator to a shop and had them change the internal regulator to a "self exciting" one which allows the "one wire" hookup as original.

: I'm as dumb as a rock when it comes to the electrical stuff, but maybe that has someting to do with your problem if you didn't do that.Let's hope Bob Carabbio reads this.

Jim,
Your hunch about a deffective alt. is right.Should be no current flow through the altenator with engine off.Possibly a leaking diode in the rectifier pak.
I run altenators on my A's and practically all the members of our club run them. They do a fine job.
Have fun!
Paul
