Just as a note, if you're using gears that are not new in the rear end (whether or not they're a mating set), then all bets are off about backlash. I set mine up to spec and found several VERY tight spots as the ring was turned, I then checked with machinist's bluing on the teeth, and found that the contact pattern was completely off.I wound up at about 18-20 thousanths to get a good contact pattern on the teeth.most of the older automotive books (Motor's, or Chilton's) from the late '40s - '50s have a good deal to say about tooth contact checking with bluing.

If there's any evidence on the ring gear of burring on the tips of the teeth, then it's best to replace the gear since the wear is considerable, and the tooth form will have changed drastically.
