: : I am thinking of an erickson od and would rebuid the rearend in the process. How much backlash should there be on the ring and pinion? 7 or 8 thos? How much preload on the pinion and how would you test or measure this? Thanks, ED

: Ed,
: The backlash between the ring and pinion is supposed to be .008 to .010".The preload is 20 in-lbs on new bearings or 12 to 15 on used bearings. This can be measured using a torque wrench and a large socket on the spline end of the drive shaft. There is a real good step by step guide through this process in the new Les Andrews book, "Model A Ford Mechanics Handbook".He says to allow 4 to 6 hours to complete the whole process of bearing preload, carrier bearing preload and ring gear backlash.

John,
I haven't had a chance to take a look at Les Andrews' book yet, but it seem pretty reasonable. The last read end I rebuilt took a little longer because I had to assemble and disassemble a couple of timesto get the carrier load right.Shims were needed under the bearing races to get the proper preload. It's one thing to get a race out you don't care about, but when you have to take out a brand new one you just put in, it take some patience.

BTW, what's an Erickson Overdrive?
