I've thought of chroming, but don't have any experience with it. I wasn't aware that you could plate heavily enough to get back to standard from 0.030 down.
The babbit isn't thrilling, but appears to be useable at least in the short term. One of the local club folks here has a boring bar for mains. So your suggestion is probably good since I'll need a good crankshaft at some point anyway.
