Repairing a flat tire

Is a patch kit used for repairing a bicycle tube also suitable for repairing a Model A tube?Are there any special precautions that ought to be used when patching a tube?What about the tire itself if perhaps a nail punctures through the tire and tube?
As a point of interest, when I obtained my unrestored '30 Tudor it still had one of the original tires and tubes (red with metal valve stem) on it.There were 32 patches on that tube and it still held air!I guess knowing how to repair a tire in those days was a very important skill for a Model A driver.
