Hi Ken -

Sounds like maybe one of the pins that hold the Clutch lever (if you're lucky) or the throwout fork (if you're not so lucky) to the shaft either fell out or sheared.If the throwout is moving back when you shove the pedal down something is shifting and those are the only two things that can.

You should be able to test by attempting to rotate the throwout fork toward the front of the car through the access opening while watching the end of the shaft at the clutch lever. If the fork moves forward, and the shaft doesn't turn outside the case, then the fork pin is gone.

Under those circumstances, I'd think that pulling the motor would be the best way in.
