HOW TO ADJUST MY CLUTCH!!!!!

I am trying to adjust my clutch to have 1" free play in the pedal. The problem started when I had to have the clutch pedal all the way to the floor to disengage the clutch. It was extremely hard to get the "A" in gear or to shift from one gear to another. It finally got so bad that when I would get the "A" in low gear with the clutch all the way to the floor, I had to keep my foot on the brake because the car wanted to roll in that gear. I knew that I had to make an adjustment at the adjusting rod, so I set about the task with the help of a friend.

The first thing we found was an extremely worn trunion nut on the adjusting rod.(3/16" groves on both ends of the trunion nut.) Wereplaced both the trunion nut and the adjusting rod. We adjusted the rod, turning the adjusting rod clockwise so we had 1" free play from the top position(level with the brake pedal.) There were still some threads left on the adjusting rod. Itook the "A" out for a short spin and it seemed to be working okay; but by the time I returned the 1" free play had increased again to about 2" above the floor! How could this happen? There was solid pressure felt at 1" from home position before I left for the test drive!

We then looked into the interior of the clutch housing by way ofthe inspection plate on top of the clutch housing. Checks were made for missing nuts or springs and all those things. Everything looked okay for the moment! The adjusting rod was unhooked and then we manually moved the throw-out bearing to check the travel of the throw out bearing. The adjusting rod was then hooked back up,turningit as far as it would go(clockwise). After doing this nad stepping on the pedal time and time again, the farther the bearing would get from contacting the fingers of the clutch pressure plate. This is weird! Waht in the world is going on?

Can anyone out there lend some insight into this problem? I need to know how to get this clutch pedal adjusted so that Ihave 1" free play in the clutch pedal.

*Note-THIS IS A FAIRLY NEW CLUTCH AND THE PREVIOUS OWNER HAD NO PROBLEM WITH IT.
