Tom,
Mainly you are asking for a bumpy ride. If the old shocks are not rusted too much I would rebuild them or have them rebuilt. Special tools are required to take the shocks apart and some do not come apart easily. I had to use a 10 foot extention on a wrench to open one of mine. Replacement shock are over $100 each.
