The whole idea of counterweights is to make life easier on the center main.I don't know of a downside other than cost.

One hidden consideration is that the crank MUST be re-ground AFTER the counterweights are installed since there's some distortion from the welding. In my case, since I'm going with inserts, the crank must be ground anyway since the oil clearance with inserts is in the crank diameter.If you're going to have to re-grind anyway - no big deal.

Make sure you get the crank magnafluxed before you put any money in it, a lot of them are cracked at the center main.

Lightening the flywheel is a good idea to compensate for the weight added to the crank.

It's been pointed out also that the crank AND flywheel AND clutch assy should be balanced as a unit.If the flywheel's not running true, and you balance the crank only you accomplish nothing.
