: : Has anyone put a Pinto Engine in a Model A and and give me feed back as to perfomance. Good and bad.

: Wade,
: While I can't help you in the installation question you're looking for, I have run across a few Model As while pinto conversions. The conversion do utilize a stanard Model A transmission and drive line. I believe that they also used a Model A clutch set up. But I have to say the methode of connecting the clutch to the fly wheel is the week link. Out at the Joint MAFCA/MARC meet in Tacoma I watched as a repair was being made to a Pinto'ed Model A. The flywheel caused the rear flange of the crankshaft to break. The repair crew was trying all sorts of procedure to reweld the flang so it could at least get the guy back home (CA). I heard the got him put back together but the repair tempoorary at best.

: If your looking for improved performance of a stock Model A you might want to check out a group called the "Secrets of Speed" as they focus on get the most out a Model A motor.

I have a 2000cc pinto in my 30 phaeton...it is mounted using a lightened A flywheel and using the A bellhousing and clutch...and works super...I have driven it probably 20,000 miles...mostly with my foot on the floor...at 65 plus mph and never had any problem with it..I did put a "sand cam" in it for low end touque and an adjustable cam gear for increased torque...and it pulls well..I changed the rear end ratio from the 3;78 to a 4;11 ...as the pinto is a much higher reving engine...I have been with several professional restorers and their coment is "boy your engine runs smoothe"...they dident even know it was a pinto...I adapted the exhaust to the stock muffler...and it really does sound like a stocker at idle...less that damm irratic miss..also I get SUPER gas milage...around 25...and the vibration is much less...I did use the 12 volt alteernator from the pinto and changed all the electrics to 12 volt...put a voltage reducer in the horn circuit...but the starter dosent need it...starts really well on 12..and in all those miles and about 9 years I am still using the original A starter...so I am sold...I looked at the Hudson Wagon works conversion...which was great...but I teach auto shop and built my own set-up...took a weekend...try it youll like it..but only use the pre 73 pinto engines...I used a 1970 ...(100 hp)..72 and 73 were somewhat less as due to smog stuff..after that the 2.3 engine came out and it is not nearly as good...the 2000 cc engine is super strong...
