I was told by a Petroleum Engineer that detergent oil will not remove deposits nor sludge already accumulated in an engine through the use of non detergent oil but will prevent further deposits if changed regularly. Can't personally swear to that but that's what the man with the Sheepskin told me. I use non-detergent for breakin oil so any impurities (dirt) in the engine from assembly will settle out in the pan. After the first oil change I remove the pan and flush it out then re-install and switch to detergent which gets changed every 500 miles. I recently removed the pan in Mr. Model A after 5000 miles of use and the pan was cleeeeean. A thang of beauty.

I also recently removed an oil pan from an engine that required a rebuild. Gently put the owner had been lax in the oil change department and I'm not saying anything here I didn't say to him personally. I have no idea the number of miles on the engine however I had to clean the oil pan with a gasket scraper. That's a first for me on a running engine. Even the dipper tray was full of gunk. Yech! Without an oil filter the oil must be changed BEFORE it gets dirty. If you can't read the dip stick through the oil you are overdue.

Time to get busy!

: Bob is right, this subject has been chewed more than yesterdays hash. Opinions on motor oil are like ear lobes, everyone has at least one and sometime two. Scroll back several months and you'll find the subject discussedad nauseum.

: Personally I won't allow multi-viscosity oil on the premisis. Period. The result of a bad experience with a REAL expensive diesel engine.

: I use Castrol 30 wt in everything on the ranch from motorhome to Model A and all in between. The Motorhome gets a dose of 40wt in the summer. The Model A gets an oil change at 500 mile intervals or when I can't see the F clearly on the dipstick through the oil. Whichever is sooner. I also use an oil additive but would rather not endorse something over the net just because it works for me.

: If you want to know more than you need to know about oil go to the following sites: www.lubrizol.com and click on reference library, also www.yondar.com/yondar/course.htm. If you digest all that is in those two sites you'll be up to speed on oil and that's a fact.
