Where's my soap box. From my perspective there is nothing to be gained by doing anything to the flywheel of a Model A other than surfacing when needed. Balancing, as Marco said, with the crank is helpful but if one wants a vibration free ride. . . buy a Pinto. The fewer cylinders the farther apart the power strokes in the degree of rotation. Without the weight of the flywheel to provide continuity the vibration can worsen, the "lugging" abilities of the little 4 lunger will all but disappear and you are worse off than before. As for myself I leave the flywheel as Henry designed it and confine my experimentation to finding new and better ways to rub the fenders.

God Speed Under 50.

The Model A Fool.

: Does anyone have any thoughts on lightening the flywheel, say by about 20 pounds? I've been told that this will add quite a bit of zip to the engine, but what is the downside? Also, what about balancing the engine as pant of a overhaul? What parts are balanced, and just how is it done.
