Transmission and differential lubricants

My gear box needed oil and I was out of 600 wt. I knew 90 wt. would leak so I used bar and chain oil which is for chainsaw bars. It is very thick and seems to work fine and does not leak anymore than 600 wt. Am I the only one to try this? The best part of it is the price. Sells for about $3.00 a GALLON!
Let me know what your thoughts are on this.
