| Paul, I'll put in another two cents worth.I would guess that the Shay's are probably about as reliable as any other late '70's to early '80's automobile that has been driven as much as the Shay you would find.I had understood that these were built on the LTD II or Fairlane II or whatever that small/medium size Ford was at that time.It probably doesn't have any rust on the body as I think they were fiberglass and it has things like hydraulic brakes and a 12 volt electrical system.I would not say that parts are any easier to find as Model A parts are probably easier to find, at least repro or restored mechanical parts from the better well known A suppliers. (A phone call and a credit card can have most anything on its way the same day.) Maintenance is probably the same as the aforementioned '70's/'80's depending on the previous owner, the storage, the maintenance etc. Pretty much like any other used car. If you are looking for simplicity and reliability then I would say the real thing is your better buy.The long term value is going to be better and if you can find a local club, you will probably find some member enthusiasts that will be willing to help you with any shortcomings in the wisdom and knowledge area. OK, I'm off my soap box. John |
