: I recently tried to start my inherited 1931 Model A, and discovered that the battery was dead. After repeated attempts to charge the battery... i decided that I might need to get a new one.Two questions

: 1.Any special type of battery to buy for these old cars?
: 2.Any special way to connect the battery?I'm asking because it appears to me that the battery was hooked-up originally with the + connector grounded to the body.
: Please reply via email.Thanks!

G'day Harold,
MRR is correct in saying that the A battery was fitted with the positive terminal to ground. When a battery has stood for a long time, the internalchemical reaction continues between the acid & the lead plates & they slowly calcify & break down, forming a layer of crud in the bottom of the battery case which eventually builds up until it touches the plates. Once the battery has reached this degenerative stage of its life, any attempts to ressurect it will prove to be pointless. My advice on replacement of the battery is to buy one with the greatest amp-hour rating available (greatest number of plates) that will fit into the mounting without any modification. You'll then have a longer cranking time than with a light duty battery. If on the other hand you only wish to start the car, this can be done with a 12 volt battery, providing the lights aren't switched on or all the globes will burn out. If you're going to get a new battery rather wait & use the 6 volt one.
