Model A 12v Conversion

Hi Guys I have Just taken delivery of a long awaited A model Tudor 1930 vintage (about 30 years) and she comes with a couple of spare engines , starter motors and a wiring system including battery that seems to be original neglected equipment. It will cost about $120 Australian for a new 6 volt battery and as I have a perfectly good spare 12 volter on hand and I am going through the dilema of convert or not to convert I would appreciate thoughts on the matter. My questions are

1.What type of alternator is recommended.
2.If negative earth is used and the starter motor left as is what happens? Does it try to go backwards? or do mostpeople just leave the converted 12 volt system as a positive earth to avoid complications?

Ta muchly for any help
